BLOOD SUPPLY OF FEMORAL HEAD

• Intra osseous blood supply – Trueta and Harrison
  • primary supply – terminal branches of Medial circumflex femoral artery (Trueta's lateral epiphyseal arteries) - >2/3rd of the femoral head – supra lateral head is exclusively supplied by this artery
  • artery of ligamentum teres – br. Of Obturator artery – Trueta's medial epiphyseal artery – negligible to ½ of epiphysis
• Extra osseus blood supply – Crock and Chung
  • extra capsular arterial ring – at base of NOF
    • posteriorly by large branch of medial circumflex artery
    • anteriorly by branch from lateral femoral circumflex artery
  • 
    
    
    
    ascending cervical branches (retinacular vessels) - surface of femoral neck
    • anterior, posterior, medial and lateral groups
    • lateral is the most important
    • proximity to NOF makes vulnerable in #
  • arteries of ligamentum teres
• subsynovial intra articular arterial ring – less distinct – epiphyseal arteries arise from this ring – most important is lateral epiphyseal artery
