Best hospital for dnb Orthopaedics Tejaswini Hospital Mangalore - a review

Tejasvini Hospital and SSIOT( Shantharam Shetty Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology)
This is a private 200 bedded Orthopaedic hospital situated in the heart of Mangalore city. This institute is headed by stalwarts in the field namely Prof Dr M Shantharam Shetty who is the chairman of the institute and Dr M Ajith Kumar who is the Head of the Department. The institute handles all aspects and subspecialities in Orthopaedics. The hospital has been running day and night since its inception in 2004.

Every year 3 primary DNB and 3 secondary Orthopaedic DNB candidates are taken in through the June DNB entrance exam. At a time there are 15 post graduates. The post graduates are posted in OPD, Casualty, Wards and in the OT. There are general and private wards where the PG will get exposed to manage the patients on a one-to-one basis. For the first 4-6 weeks, the fresh PGs have to observe the working of the hospital in the casualty , wards and OPD. Following this , they have to observe the working of the OT.
The OPD’s are on all day long, sometimes late into the night upto 2 am or more. Casualty duties are 24 hour duties which will be gruelling and tedious but they train you in and out.OT runs all day everyday except on Sundays when cases may be posted if there are emergencies.
Schedule-
7.30 am daily class for discussion of Admissions, Pre-ops and post op cases. This is followed by a short presentation by the PGs.
Rounds of the hospital ensue where its mandatory for all the pgs to attend. Following this, all pgs have to work according to their allocated duties( OPD, Casualty, Wards or OT).

Case Load- Every aspect of the field of Orthopaedics is dealt with here. Malignant tumors are less commonly managed here.
Cutting Chances- Lewd terminology but this is what all the potential pg’s enquire. The patients come for the bosses and its the responsibility of each and every PG there to respect that and manage the patient accordingly. The PGs will be given chances according to their functioning in the institute.  You can contact me personally for more details on this subject.
Stipend- Karnataka stipend is followed- 30k,35k, 40k for 1st, 2nd and Final year respectively.
No accommodation is provided.
Fairly priced rental apartments are available nearby.
Working environment is very friendly and its like a family for 3 /2 years which you spend there. One has to keep in  mind that discipline and respect towards work and patients are of utmost priority in the functioning of the hospital.

Working hours – The bosses work more than the PGs. They are in the hospital from 7.30 am (sometimes 6am if cases are posted earlier ) right upto 1-2 am. There is no complaining for working hours. One shouldn’t consider this as a deciding criteria as one wont get to see the variety of patients in any DNB institute all over India.  The more time one spends at the hospital, the more experience he/she will gain.
Passing rate- 100% passing since 2010
Academic program- Daily morning class supplemented with regular classes by consultants.
Keep it in your mind,  that this is a post graduate course and no one will spoon feed you. You have to make an active effort. Whoever makes the effort gets credit and support. The PGs are encouraged to publish papers, present at conferences. Gender is no bar here, everyone has equal opportunities and responsibilities. Recently a female has taken up DNB Orthopaedics here and is performing exceptionally well.

Leaves are strictly monitored and in according to the National Board limit.
Cons- accommodation not provided but that is absolutely not a criteria to deter someone from taking a wholesome institute as it is.

Pros-
You will not only learn Orthopaedics as a whole, but you will learn how to manage a patient right from the time they enter the hospital. The program shapes one into a complete clinician. One can get to do most of the cases in the correct way under supervision if they are disciplined and follow the rules of the hospital.
All in all, its one of the best institutes to pursue your DNB Orthopaedics from under the guidance of  Prof Dr M Shantharam Shetty ,Dr M Ajith Kumar and the very able consultants.
