Review on Dnb orthopaedics course at Apollo hospitals bilaspur by Dr Satish kumar - orthodnb.com
Dr. Satish |
Hi. I am writing this article reviewing apollo hospital bilaspur where i am currently doing 2nd year PG.
General info-
This hospital is unique in the sense, 80% of the patient case load is actually patients referred by government. Healthcare in Chhattisgarh is pretty backward and only handful of hospitals provide quality healthcare. Many govt companies which have huge number of employees but poor hospital infrastructure are in tie up with our hospital and they refer their patients here for treatment. So we get a medical college like atmosphere in a private setup.
Many candidates become apprehensive of APOLLO brand thinking they won’t be allowed to touch patients or do surgeries, but it’s not true at our hospital because hardly 20% of the patients are cash patients who are usually demanding, apprehensive and do not allow juniors doctors to examine or treat them.

Dept info:
There are two Consultants. One consultant has specialized in spine surgery. The other consultant does knee and hip replacement surgery. We are posted every month alternately with each consultant.
Stipend and accommodation details:
Stipend is 43.5k,45.5k and 47.5k in 1st,2nd and 3rd yr.
Accommodation is free in quarters but subject to availability.
Just beside the hospital, a hotel is in tie-up with hospital for accommodation which is given if a quarter is not available and costs 4k per month.
working hours:
Morning work starts usually at 8am. During OPD day, we have OPD from 10am-2pm and 4-6pm. During OT day, operation starts around 9am and usually finishes by 4-5pm, except few days when it goes up to 8pm.
Emergency duty:
Usually the first year pg attends the case first in emergency. In first year, emergency duties are 15 days per month. Duties gradually decrease as we become senior.
Cutting chances:
Cutting is given according to seniority and also depends on whether the candidate is primary or secondary. For primary candidates, we get good cutting chances here.
In first year, I have performed K-wire fixation for colles fracture, dislocation reductions under GA, dynamizations , wound debridement, casts, intra- articular injections. I have assisted super major cases like TKR, spine instrumentation, disscectomies and scoliosis correction.
In second year, we usually get to do external fixators, tibia nailing, femur nailing, small skin grafts, metacarpal fractures etc.
In third year, we get to do dynamic hip screw and PFN for IT fracture, amputations, caudal epidural injections, skin grafting, ulna plating, humerus nailing, radius and ulna nailing etc.
Secondary candidates get to do more peri- articular fractures like proximal humerus, distal femur and proximal tibia fractures and once we gain their trust, they give us chance to do them too. What we get here, is almost comparable to what MS candidates in govt medical colleges.
OPD:
Yes, consultants as such don’t deny us to see patients first hand. We can take history and do examination of patients beforehand and note down the findings in OPD. It depends on our self interest. If we show interest in learning, the consultants are willing to teach and correct us, otherwise they will limit us to just writing prescription pad and giving it to patients.
OPD procedures like slab, cast, knee aspiration, intra-articular injections, k-wire removal , dynamization of tibia ,femur screws are routinely done by candidates.
How are the academics? any case presentations done?
The Achilles heel of this institute is academics. Classes are not so regular and it solely depends on self interest to do seminars and case presentations. Consultants do tell occasionally to keep the academics regular but are not strict. But they allow us to attend academic programs such as pg case presentation courses.
How is the pass rate? Have your seniors passed.
Two secondary candidates and one primary have passed theory exam in first attempt and will be giving second attempt at practicals.
Overall:
I am satisfied. I chose this hospital because,
1. I wanted orthopaedic surgery.
2. Cutting chances here is far better than so many private DNB hospitals where the cutting is next to nil.
3. I have lived here before and I am familiar with this place.
